U.S. Urges DRC to Review Mining Contracts Amid Push for Transparency and Raw Materials

During a diplomatic visit to South Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and Rwanda, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken reaffirmed Washington’s support for a review of mining contracts in the DRC—particularly those involving Chinese companies.

Blinken emphasized that the United States backs the DRC government’s efforts to increase transparency, improve labor rights, and enforce environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards in the mining sector.

To support these initiatives, the U.S. is providing over $30 million in aid to promote responsible and sustainable mining practices. Additionally, $23.75 million will be allocated to support the country’s upcoming general elections.

Analysts suggest that beyond governance concerns, the U.S. is also seeking to strengthen strategic ties with the DRC, which holds immense mineral wealth. The country is home to an estimated $24 trillion in untapped resources and produces 70% of the world’s cobalt and 60% of its coltan—key materials for electronics, clean energy, and aerospace industries.

As the U.S. works to diversify its supply chains, the DRC’s role as a critical source of raw materials is becoming increasingly central to Washington’s global economic and strategic priorities.
