Is it possible to recover precious metals from solid wastes?
Time: 2022-10-11 Source: Writer:
In my previous post, I discussed how to recover gold from cyanide waste liquid containing gold. Today, I will talk about how to recover gold from gold containing solid waste. There are many kinds of solid wastes containing gold, such as electronic chips, CUP, contacts, gold plating, etc. The specific recovery methods for different kinds of waste materials are different, but the general recovery process is the same. As a general rule, it involves sorting and classifying, making liquids, separating, enriching, and purifying metals, extracting crude gold, and refining it.
Selecting and sorting gold-containing scraps is the first step, and many scraps will contain other materials, such as plastics or base metals. Before formal recycling can take place, any visible scrap or base metals that can be manually removed must be removed.
The second step is to make liquid. It is important to pay attention when operating this step. If there are more base metals in the waste, you can first use a single acid such as hydrochloric acid, nitric acid or sulfuric acid to make a liquid, since a single acid can dissolve the base metal, but it does not dissolve precious metals like gold, platinum and rhodium. When the liquid is made, the base metal enters the solution, and the precious metal enters the precipitate. A preliminary separation of precious and base metals can be achieved after filtering. If the scrap metal composition is relatively simple, aqua regia solution can be used directly. As an example, the metal coating on plastic surfaces, or solid waste such as ash thrown away in jewelry factories, can be made directly with aqua regia solution, and almost all of the metals will enter the solution.
The third step is metal separation and enrichment. Metals are generally present in the solution after the liquid is made. To separate and enrich various metals, different separation and enrichment processes can be used depending on their properties. There are many enrichment methods, including activated carbon enrichment, organic solvent extraction enrichment, and ion exchange enrichment.
The fourth step is the extraction of precious metals. The enrichment solution can be chemically reduced or electrolytically reduced to extract the precious metals and purify them after separation, enrichment, and purification. After this step is completed, the precious metal crude material can be obtained, and the crude material can then be refined to obtain the precious metal with relatively high purity.
