  • Congo (DRC) should review the mining contract, the United States urges.

    Time: 2022-08-22 Source: Writer: Dasenmining
According to a comprehensive report on August 14, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently visited South Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda. During his diplomatic visit to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Antony Blinken reiterated the position of the United States, that is, requiring the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to amend several mining contracts, mainly targeting Chinese mining companies in the DRC.
    • Antony Blinken said in a statement that the United States supports the decision of the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to review mining contracts and strengthen the accountability of the Department. Encourages the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to continue its cooperation and efforts in financial transparency, labour rights and respect for environmental, social and governance standards of the mining industry.
At the same time, the United States is providing more than US $30 million in assistance to help the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) promote responsible and sustainable mining practices. In addition, the United States also announced that it would provide us $23.75 million to support the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) general election. In addition to urging and supporting the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to review the mining contract, some analysts believe that Antony Blinken's visit is also intended to promote investment and cooperation between the United States and DRC in key raw materials and other fields. It is understood that the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has not only undeveloped mineral resources valued at $24 trillion, but also 70% of cobalt and 60% of coltan in the world. It is the fourth largest copper producer in the world.
These are key raw materials for electronic equipment, aviation equipment and clean energy technology. The United States hopes to build a new supply chain and urgently needs these key raw materials. Therefore, as a country with extremely rich mineral resources, the importance of Congo (DRC) is increasingly prominent.
